WASHINGTON – Today, Congresswoman Jahana Hayes (CT-05) announced that a student from Western Connecticut State University (WSCU), will attend the State of the Union on February 7, 2023, as her guest. The student run radio station, WXCI 91.7FM contacted the office requesting media passes to the State of the Union. While press credentials could not be issued, the Congresswoman offered to host a student. As an emerging leader at the radio station and the university newspaper, Niko, was selected by his peers to represent the school at this historic event.

“You can become civically engaged at any age. As an educator, it was my practice to empower students to be active participants in our democracy. As a Member of Congress, that has not changed – in fact, I am more determined to bring young people into the fold. Witnessing history firsthand is the greatest learning opportunity a teacher can provide, which is why I am honored to welcome Niko as my guest at the State of the Union,” said Congresswoman Hayes. “Tomorrow, the House Chamber is the classroom. I look forward to sharing this experience with Niko and hope young people throughout the Fifth are inspired to get involved in their communities.”

“I'm so incredibly honored and excited to attend an event so crucial to our democracy,” said Niko. “I hope to show that young people are a part of our democracy, that we're listening and that our voices are here."
