Dear Friend,

This week, I voted with my colleagues to pass H.R. 9, the Climate Action Now Act, to ensure that the United States remains a strong international partner in upholding our commitments detailed in the Paris Climate Agreement.

Like the overwhelming majority of Americans, I understand that climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time. If we do not adhere to the promises we made as a nation in the Paris Climate Agreement, our children and grandchildren will pay the price. That's why I was proud to be a cosponsor of this critical legislation.

H.R. 9 would prohibit any federal funds from being directed to implement the withdrawal of the United States from the Paris Agreement. No less importantly, it would call on the President to develop a thorough and public plan on how our nation would reduce pollution, limit carbon emissions, and develop a sustainable green economy for the future. These are vital steps in safeguarding the health of our planet for the future, and in working to remedy damage that has already been inflicted.

In addition to our moral obligation to ensure we provide an Earth with clean air and water to the next generations, our nation's status as a global leader depends on our continued dedication to multilateral agreements. I am proud that my amendment to H.R. 9, which emphasizes that the Paris Agreement is a predominant example of multilateral, international cooperation necessary to overcoming global challenges, was included in the final text of the bill.

However, our work is not done. Keeping promises already made to the international community to ensure future generations live on a clean and healthy planet is the least we can do. Please know that I am working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to advance legislation that promotes the development of green technology, educates a workforce to enter the green energy industry, cuts carbon emissions and reduces pollution in our air, land and water.
