Under Attack

May 17, 2019

Dear Friend,

A woman's right to choose is under attack.

Alabama's governor just signed into law a piece of legislation that says abortion -

Even in the case of rape or incest -

is illegal.

I won't sugar coat this- I'm angry. I'm angry that in 2019, women are still fighting to have autonomy over their bodies. Over their health care. Over their lives.

This law wasn't crafted just to devastate the bodily autonomy of Alabaman women. This law was crafted with the explicit intent to strike down Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court case that recognized the legal right to an abortion.

In other words, this law was crafted to challenge every person's right to a safe and accessible abortion in America.

Attacks like this aren't just happening in Alabama- restrictive abortion laws have now been proposed or signed into law in 14 states. Opponents of a woman's right to choose want us to go back to a time when women died trying to get health care. When women had to travel overseas to get health care. When women didn't have control over their own reproductive futures.

Now, more than ever, it is vitally important that we stand up for every woman's right to reproductive health care.

I will always stand up for every woman's right to choose.

I will always stand up for protections that make women's health care safer, and more accessible.

I will always stand up for every woman's right to have complete autonomy over what happens to her own body.

If I know one thing for sure, it's that this is not going to end in Alabama. This is just the beginning if we don't act. Every person who supports a woman's right to choose - a woman's right to her bodily autonomy - a woman's right to control her own life - will have to stand up and say this is unacceptable.

I promise to stay in this fight.
