WATERBURY – Today, Congresswoman Jahana Hayes (CT-05) announced nearly $40 million is coming back to the district through the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability & Equity (RAISE) Grants program. The City of Waterbury is being awarded $23.1 million dollars for the Waterbury Active Transportation and Economic Resurgence Phase II, and the Capitol Region Council of Governments is being awarded $16.3 million for, CT Trail Connections: Building a Network of Trails to Connect People to Jobs.

“I am pleased to see significant federal dollars coming back to my district to help revitalize the city landscape and create an economic and environmental hub,” said Congresswoman Hayes. “This grant award is the epitome of collaboration at the local and federal level, as the entire CT delegation worked diligently with the U.S. Department of Transportation and local leaders to secure these funds. I will continue to make every effort to bolster support for our communities, expand access to green spaces and revitalize strategic economic zones.”

The city of Waterbury will use the funding to continue phase II of the Naugatuck River Greenway. Capitol Region Council of Governments will use the funding to help the New Britain & Plainville communities further progression of the Farmington Canal Heritage Trail.

Congresswoman Hayes advocated directly with the Department of Transportation on both applications and was instrumental in the selected projects receiving funding. RAISE discretionary grants, which were originally created under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act as TIGER grants, can be used for a wide variety of projects. The popular program helps communities carry out projects with significant local or regional impact.
