WASHINGTON D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Jahana Hayes (CT-05) issued the following statement praising the decision from a federal judge to block the Trump Administration from dismantling the Department of Education and ordering the immediate rehiring of unlawfully terminated staff. The ruling directly cited an amicus brief, which Congresswoman Hayes signed onto and helped lead along with 192 House Democrats, underscoring the importance of their efforts to protect the agency.

“This ruling is a significant victory for the dedicated public servants at the Department of Education,” said Congresswoman Hayes. “The attempts by the administration to unilaterally dismantle the Department of Education were a blatant overreach of power and a direct assault on the rule of law. The immediate rehiring of these unlawfully terminated staff members is paramount. These are the experts, the professionals, and the committed individuals who work tirelessly to support our education system. Their presence at the Department is essential to its function and to ensuring that programs designed to benefit students and schools are effectively administered. My Democratic colleagues and I are pleased with our successful efforts in supporting the legal challenge that led to this decision.”

The decision by the federal court in State of New York v. Linda McMahon affirmed the arguments made in the amicus brief, which challenged the efforts by the Trump Administration to effectively close the Department of Education. The ruling highlighted the importance of congressional oversight and the constitutional separation of powers.
