Dear Friend,

If we haven't met before, I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself - I’m Jahana Hayes, and I am your Congresswoman in the United States House of Representatives. I grew up, started a career, and raised my family in Waterbury, CT. I am a mother, educator, and was honored to be named the National Teacher of the Year in 2016. It is a privilege to serve you and the Fifth District of Connecticut.

If you are not familiar with me, there is one thing you should know: I came to Washington to be a work horse, not a show horse. Since my first day, I have gone to work to serve my constituents.

I have ensured my that my staff is ready to serve you in Connecticut and Washington. You can reach my Waterbury office by calling (860) 223-8412 or in person on the second floor at 108 Bank Street. The phone number for my Washington office is (202) 225-4476 and the address is 1415 Longworth House Office Building if you are visiting Capitol. My staff is available from 9AM-5PM, Monday through Friday, to assist you by phone or in person.

Additionally, I was proud to have been appointed to the Committee on Education and Labor, as well as Committee on Agriculture. No less importantly, since coming to Congress I have:

  • Introduced House Resolution 58, to support the goal of increasing public school teacher pay and public education funding, with my colleague Congressman O’Halleran;
  • Cosponsored the Social Security 2100, and the Social Security Fairness Act to ensure retirement security for generations to come;
  • Cosponsored the Raise the Wage Act, which would raise the federal minimum wage to $15/hour;
  • Cosponsored the Family and Medical Insurance Leave (FAMILY) Act, which would provide 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave;
  • Cosponsored H.R. 8, the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019 to make progress toward commonsense gun reform;
  • Cosponsored H.R. 1, the For the People Act of 2019 to protect our elections and hold our government officials accountable;
  • Voted 11 times during the partial government shutdown to reopen the government, and voted for House Joint Resolution 31, which funded the federal government and invested in national security, environmental protection, infrastructure and small business through the end of the fiscal year;
  • Voted for H.R. 1112, the Enhanced Background Checks Act of 2019, which would close a loophole in current law that enables firearms to be transferred by licensed gun dealers before required background checks have been completed, commonly referred to as the “Charleston loophole;”
  • Joined the bipartisan Freshman Working Group on Addiction to tackle the nation’s opioid crisis;
  • Joined the bipartisan Gun Violence Prevention Task Force as Deputy Whip.
