Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Jahana Hayes (CT-05) released the following response after receiving some details of President Trump’s proposed fiscal year 2020 budget. The $4.75 trillion budget – the largest in federal history – contains drastic cuts to vital domestic programs like education, Medicare and Medicaid, food stamps, and Social Security. In total, it calls for $2.7 trillion in cuts over 10 years. The proposal also contains a request of $8.6 billion for a border wall and an increase to $750 billion for defense spending.

“The budget is a statement of our values. It shows what we care about as a nation and what we are willing to spend money on. The President’s proposed budget contains 12% cuts to the Department of Education and the Department of Health and Human Services, cuts of $25 billion over 10 years to Social Security, and even deeper cuts to Medicaid. This proposal does not reflect the values of the people in my district,” said Congresswoman Hayes. “This budget shows exactly where the president’s priorities are, and they do not align with the people in my district who rely on important services provided by these departments.”

“We need to be investing our resources in our people – through equitable access to education, access to affordable, quality health care, and ensuring that Americans can trust and rely on their federal government,” Congresswoman Hayes said.
