WATERBURY – Today, Congresswoman Jahana Hayes (CT-05) released the following statement after President Joe Biden approved the request by Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont for a federal emergency declaration in the wake of historic rainfall and flooding on Sunday, August 18, 2024.
"In less than 24 hours, President Biden has approved the request from Governor Lamont and the Connecticut federal delegation to declare an emergency in the State of Connecticut and has ordered Federal funding to assist with alleviating hardship and suffering, debris removal, and assistance for emergency measures in Western Connecticut communities impacted by unprecedented rainfall and flooding.
This order authorizes the Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency, and other Federal agencies to coordinate disaster relief and support ongoing State and local efforts to recover from the damage sustained during the storms.
I am extremely grateful for this swift action from the Biden-Harris Administration in addressing recovery efforts in the district. These storms caused significant damage to critical infrastructure, impacted local businesses, and decimated many homes in the Fifth District and across the region.
I will continue to work towards efforts that bring as much federal assistance to our state to rebuild from this catastrophic storm."
