Happy Independence Day! Today, as we celebrate the founding of this great nation, I am taking some time to reflect on the opportunities that this country has afforded me. Only in America could a girl who grew up in public housing, with a family battling addiction, end up with four degrees in education and a career in the classroom. Only in America could that same girl go on to be named National Teacher of the Year by the first African-American President of the United States. And only in America could this same girl go on to be the first African-American Congresswoman from Connecticut, and your Representative. I am proof that when we ensure access to opportunity, anyone in this country can have the American Dream. On this Fourth of July, I celebrate an America in which every child can pursue their American Dream. I wish you and your family a fantastic Independence Day.
