WASHINGTON – Today, following the House vote on a 45-day short-term spending bill, Congresswoman Jahana Hayes (CT-05) issued the following statement:
“Today, I voted to pass a continuing resolution to keep the government funded for 45 days and avoid a government shutdown, while we continue to work on appropriations bills. Almost half of the Republican conference voted against the bill brought to the floor by Speaker McCarthy. In the final tally of 335-91 – House Democrats were the people who stood firm on behalf of the American people.
On background, Democrats and Republicans negotiated an agreement in May to serve as a framework for funding the government. McCarthy quickly walked back the terms of that agreement in the first seven days. We are in this eleventh hour position because of the chaos, confusion and disfunction on full display in the Republican conference.
Democrats did not get everything we wanted in this bill but in a Republican majority, Speaker McCarthy ultimately decides what is brought to the floor. After much delay, Republicans put a bill on the floor to avoid a shutdown and 90 of the 221 Republican members voted against their own bill to fund the government.
Once again House Democrats have had to come to the rescue to push back against this extreme agenda and ensure we are doing all we can to help the American people.”
